Charlie will be defending his Semi-Pro MMA title tonight and healing the show. As usual I will be tweeting much as I can live from the event – follow the action by following our Twitter account @promaimma
UPDATE: It was a great night again for Charlie last night at Extreme Fight Night 2, he co-headlined the show and was up against a very solid wrestler with a 5-2 record. Charlie being his usual laid back self turned with only about an hour until his fight! But it was no problem, after wrapping his hands and doing a nice warm-up back stage he was ready to go. The fight went very much in line with our predictions, we felt Charlie’s opponent would try and push the fight to the cage and try and muscle some take downs – especially with such a small cage – and that’s exactly what happened. I’d asked Charlie to really just relax through the pressure for the first minute and let the guy blow himself out with take down attempts and that was the story of the first round. The guy was coming hard and trying to take the fight down but Charlie was nice and relaxed throughout the whole round. There were some nice reversals and exchanges on the ground but towards the end Charlie’s opponent was tiring and mostly stalling.
Coming out for the second round Charlie looked very fresh, unlike his last few fights! He managed to get some nice stand up going including a nice head kick and a big rolling right hand exactly like we’d worked on in training. As Charlie’s opponent continued to tire Charlie started to dominate most aspects of the fight including getting some take downs of his own. He also controlled all of the ground game as once again his opponent mostly held onto stuff just looking to stall rather than win. It finished with Charlie sprawled on top of his opponent who just tried to hold onto a leg to prevent any attacks, with time running out Charlie did anything he could to make something happen including some Sakuraba style double strikes to the legs!
The first round might have been a little close with Charlie having to be on his back a bit but the second round was easily won by Charlie – the judges gave Charlie the fight on a unanimous decision.
It was another very impressive win from Charlie, he is now 5-0 at Semi-Pro and now holds two belts. Most important for me was to see how well he maintained his energy and focus throughout the fight, his last few fights have been just as impressive technically but he’s struggled as the fight has gone on with keeping his energy levels up and he usually comes out of the cage looking very drained. Last night he looked ready to go another round and finished the fight smiling and enjoying it rather than looking like he was glad it was over! Even though this might not have been his toughest opponent to date the guy was very strong and has a lot of experience, Charlie handled it fantastically well and I believe this is another big step forward for him particularly from a psychological point of view.
